Soul" and "Patsy And Co".

Mais quid les 18 morceaux par Roger Renaud? Où sont-ils? Quels sont-ils?

So Kitsch (An Irresistible Cocktail of the Genuine Television and Radio Sounds from the 40's to the 70's)!

  • Jean-Claude Julien alias Ted Moren

  1. Calypso = Encore Un Scotch (Stellar W. 926 "Dancing Selection Volume 6")
  2. Honey Dance = Weather Permitting (Stellar W. 924 "Dancing Selection Volume 4")
  3. Bossa And Sun = Crucero A Vera Cruz (Stellar W. 924 "Dancing Selection Volume 4")
  4. You Were So Beautiful = Agnes Et Sophie (Stellar W. 924 "Dancing Selection Volume 4")

Who is Roger Renaud?

Well, he is a French composer. But thanks to my curiosity, I have a little story to this...

I first encountered the name Roger Renaud in May 2012 while I was on the trail of the works of the composer Yan Tregger (alias of Ted Scotto, whose eclectic works merit another page).

I saw an unusual production library CD, Cheesy Beats from Justement Music (now MYMA (Montmorency Music Agency)) with tracks by the two composers. The Tregger tracks on "Cheesy Beats" are all rereleases of commercial disco records from the 70s, originally released under the names M.B.T. Soul and Patsy And Co.

But what about the 18 Roger Renaud tracks? Where are they? What are they?

There are two problems. Firstly, could he really have named tracks "I love 80's" and "Miss France 2008" in the 70s/80s? It's possible, but more likely that these were renamed by Justement Music for their CD. Also, who recorded the songs? There are no other names on the CD, no groups.

So I am searching for an unknown disc, for which I don't know the name of the artists or even the songs. And it might not even exist! All the information I have is the name Roger Renaud and the sound of the songs...

I looked for other works released by Justement Music and voila, two CDs, with tracks credited to Roger Renaud, "Kitsch Nuggets" and So Kitsch (An Irresistible Cocktail of the Genuine Television and Radio Sounds from the 40's to the 70's). This time there is a great variety of music, no disco, but a jazz, latin and pop mix, very distinctive and a little unusual.

I am now very curious. What are the origins of this music?

I look at the names on the three CDs. On So Kitsch there are two others, Rio Jeno and Dick Lemaine. I searched the internet for Rio Jeno and saw the same tracks by Roger Renaud for sale as mp3s. So Rio Jeno is an alias of Roger Renaud. Dick Lemaine was more difficult, his name wasn't there so I searched the works of Sacem (the French society of composers and music editors) and I saw Dick Lemaine is also an alias of Roger Renaud.

It was the name Rio Jeno that helped me find more. A very few LPs on the library label Chappell have tracks by Rio Jeno. These aren't the same material as the CDs, but confirm that Roger Renaud compositions were used as library music in the 70s.

Where are the vinyl records of the compositions on the Justement CDs? Do they exist?

After a little while, I discovered a series of 45 rpm records released by "Miami". But there was no information about the company, and the record sleeves had no publisher, address or contact information. A mystery! Who is responsible for these releases?

Some Miami disques have compositions by R. Renaud, Rio Jeno, and also Ted Moren. IPI numbers show that Ted Moren is an alias of Jean-Claude Julien, who shares composer credits with Roger Renaud for many compositions in the Sacem works database.

So there are at least five names for these compositions:

  • Roger Renaud alias Rio Jeno and Dick Lemaine
  • Jean-Claude Julien alias Ted Moren

As well as the Miamis, there is another series of 45s called "Astral", and both Astral and Miami have 33 rpm 10" releases too. There is another series called "Stellar" which I think only has 10" releases, all called "Dancing Selection". All the labels feature the same music.

It was one of the Dancing Selection records (volume 4), which had the key to the puzzle. I listened to the fourth song, "Weather Permitting" by Ted Moren, and I jumped - it's the same song as "Honey Dance" on the So Kitsch CD! After this, I soon found the first four tracks on So Kitsch:

  1. Calypso = Encore Un Scotch (Stellar W. 926 "Dancing Selection Volume 6")
  2. Honey Dance = Weather Permitting (Stellar W. 924 "Dancing Selection Volume 4")
  3. Bossa And Sun = Crucero A Vera Cruz (Stellar W. 924 "Dancing Selection Volume 4")
  4. You Were So Beautiful = Agnes Et Sophie (Stellar W. 924 "Dancing Selection Volume 4")
Tracks 2, 3 and 4 are also on Astral 10" release HS 753 "Violons En Croisiere".

I continued to search for the other tracks. Perhaps they are on another disc? But I could not find them. Instead, I began to explore the labels and enjoy the music.

There is a great variety of music on Astral and Miami, from foxtrots and light music "slows", to bright latin in many rhythms, "jerk" pop and some interesting funk-like tracks, but no disco. My favourite are the jazz-pop tracks with scat singing, for example "Como Le Parece" (by Rio Jeno) on Miami 7" disc E. 488 "Stanley Clark n°7". More of this music deserves a new release, perhaps a new album!

Over time, I found other compositions by Roger Renaud on other discs and discovered more about the history of his work. He wrote many songs, some published by "Éditions Musicales Jilune" and "Éditions Musicales France Accordéon", and a book of recorder duets "Flutodies" published by August Zurfluh. Some works have been recorded by artists such as Bruno Lorenzoni, J.P. Coustillas and Raymond Massard.

Perhaps the most interesting recording I found was a 7" disc on Trianon (a budget label of Pathé Marconi) by "Tony Madero Y Su Orquesta", all the tracks are from Astral/Miami releases and the publishing companies are named as Jilune and R.L. Julien.

Additionally, Roger Renaud has a large number of manuscripts in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, published by Tecipress (a production company now part of Groupe M6). It's possible that the Tecipress music is the unknown music on the CDs. It's also possible that recordings of these exist only on tape in the archives of MYMA. MYMA may have had the answers all along!

At this stage, I feel I have some idea of who Roger Renaud is. Should he ever read this, I would like to thank him for his work, which I've enjoyed listening to and researching.

My thanks also to all involved in the composition, recording, production and distribution of these discs, including all who have taken the time to add information about them to the internet, and those who have sold me discs and scores.
